As the school year winds down, one group of students is already thinking ahead to the fall: kindergartners. Kindergarten round-up is usually held in the spring, with the goal of introducing new students to the school routine, their classroom and teachers, and of informing parents about school policies and procedures. It’s also a perfect time to teach bus safety to this incoming class of new riders.
While bus safety behaviors might be well-established in older students, most kindergartners have never ridden the big yellow bus on their own before, and have no idea how to ride the bus safely. Today, we’ll share a few bus safety tips for incoming kindergartners and other new riders.
Be On Time
Arrive at the bus in plenty of time – at least five minutes before the scheduled stop. Running to catch the bus increases the likelihood of injury. Wait until the bus is completely stopped before getting on, and find a seat quickly.
Remain quiet on the bus – talking is okay, but keep excessive noise to a minimum. This prevents the driver from becoming distracted, and allows him or her to hear sirens, train whistles, and the like. Follow all of the driver’s instructions while on the bus.
Know Your Bus and Route
This one is especially important for kindergartners: know your bus numbers and the scheduled stop times. In addition, students should carry identification with their name, telephone number and bus number. (Our writable ID tag is the perfect solution.)
Get Off The Bus Safely
Be ready to get off the bus when your stop nears, but don’t stand up until the bus has come to a complete stop. After exiting the bus, walk away from it. The “danger zone” – the area immediately surrounding the bus on all sides – is the most dangerous for students, so it’s important not to remain there. If you have to cross the street, walk at least five steps in front of the bus, look both ways for traffic, and cross carefully. Make sure the driver can see you at all times.
